He took a very big interest in cars from an early age, however, at the start of the Second World War in 1939, Ferruccio had to put his dreaming of cars to one side as he joined the Italian Army and was stationed on the Island of Rhodes, Greece, where he spent a considerable amount of time fixing old cars, bikes and trucks for the army.
Luckily, he saw very little action and so survived the war. His love for cars, though, had not been dampened during the war years.
He returned to his hometown near Modena in Italy and set up a small car and motorcycle repair shop. He then quickly discovered that Italy was in great need of tractors so he decided to renovate old military vehicles for agricultural use and to build his own tractor engines.
Although these tractors were very different from the Lamborghinis of today, they had set the foundations of the Lamborghini name.
Because of the success of his tractor business, he turned his eye to developing a high performance car.
By the 1963 Turin Auto Show, Lamborghini had created a working prototype of a V12 performance car that he named the 350 GTV, and by 1964, the cars were on sale as the 350 GT.
With funds still coming in from his tractor building company, he was able to create more new cars, including the 400 GT and the 400 GT 2+2. This made the Lamborghini name very popular, but the real breakthrough to success was a car released in 1966, known as the Miura.
From then on, Automobili Lamborghini created some of the fastest, most powerful and best looking cars the world had ever seen.
Upon Ferruccio Lamborghini’s death in 1993, the car firm was a massive success, and he owed all of it to a national need for tractors.
