The New Audi RS5

The eagerly awaited missing link between the RS4 and the RS6 is finally here.

The RS5 has a 4.2 litre V8, but not the usual V8 that fast Audis have had for the past few years. It differs because it is the 5 litre V10 from the RS6 but with two of the cylinders knocked off. It produces 444 bhp as well as 317 lb ft of torque, and will get from 0-60 in 4.6 seconds. Quite a recipe then. Coupled with four-wheel drive, this car really does shift, and with starting prices at £57,480, it ought to.

There are a few problems, however. You have to pay an extra £900 to get the sports exhaust package, which surely if you are spending this kind of money on a car, you would want it to have the system anyway, and if you don’t, then why not buy the cheaper S5. Not only that, but you have to pay another £6,250 for ceramic brakes, and those are only for the front. The rear brakes remain as steel no-matter how much you pay. And, to top it off the satnav system costs £1,495, which is about £1,395 more than it should be. Eventually, if you ticked every box Audi has, you can easily add £20,000 more to the car, which is frankly ridiculous.

One final issue is that this car weighs more than its two rivals, the BMW M3 and the Mercedes E63, and therefore, will not be quite as nice to drive. But, the E63 looks fowl and the M3 is bought principally by people who have bluetooth headsets.

The RS5, then, will be a great car, a great drive, and a good looker. But best of all, it will have a noise that can shatter windows on different continents. It’s just a shame about the price.
