Video: 2017 Subaru BRZ Automatic Review
Many people, myself included, really, really like the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT86. They reminded the world that fun could be found in small, lightweight, rear-wheel drive, manual gearbox sports cars, not just 500bhp super-saloons or Ferraris. Now both the BRZ and GT86 have been updated, and I’ve spent some time driving the BRZ.
Not just any BRZ, however. My BRZ did not have the excellent six-speed manual gearbox, but instead a six-speed automatic gearbox with paddles behind the steering wheel. Maybe building a BRZ automatic, when the manual BRZ is the vehicle that reminds us how to have fun in a car, is a terrible idea that simply spoils the fun. But what if you’ve only ever driven automatics but still love driving? Should you be penalised, or should you be given the same chance as everyone else to enjoy one of the best chassis around?
